The Barony of Bjornsborg
Pilgrimage to St. Adalbert's
April 4-6, 2003
The great pilgrimage roads, to Rome, the Holy Land and Santiago de Compostela,
were dotted with lesser pilgrimage sites. These places vied with each other
for pilgrims' patronage. The Barony of Bjornsborg invites Ansteorra to take
pilgrimage to Savernake and the Chapel of Saint Adalbert. In addition to the
Chapel, there are a number of other shrines to visit.
For those gentles looking to hire on as pilgrims' guards, there will be a
progressive melee in both chivalric and rapier styles. Please bring something
to add to the "Hire" chest which will also contain goods from some of
Bjornsborg's fine artisans.
Artisans may compete with one another, "offering" their arts to St. Adalbert
and receiving great reward. Only appropriate works may compete. (i.e. theme is
religious art in any medium. There will be static and performance
competitions.)
There will be a Knife, Axe and Spear Throw competition Saturday and the
Longship Breakfast Sunday.
The local inn will serve a simple meal of cheese, bread, stew and dessert for
75 -100 people. Check the website for ingredients.
Site fee $10 per adult, $6 for ages 7-17 years old, free for ages 6 and under.
$30 family maximum (equivalent of 3 adult fees.)
Remember the $3 Non-Member Surcharge for adults.
Feast fee- $5
Send prepaid feast reservations to the Event Steward.
Merchants are welcome and encouraged. Contact the Merchant Liaison.
Site opens 5pm Friday and closes noon Sunday. Site address is 1872 R 270,
Mico, TX 78056 (Savernake). For a map, look to the March Black Star and the
website.
Site address is 1872 CR 270, Mico, TX 78056 (Savernake). Site opens 5pm Friday
and closes noon Sunday.
Written Directions
Take your best route to Loop 1604 North of San Antonio. Head West on 1604
North. Take 1604 to 471 (Culebra). Follow 471 South toward Taft High School.
Stay on 471 for around 8 miles, until you reach a flashing yellow light. This
will be the intersection of 471 and FM 1283. Bear to the right. This will put
you on 1283. Stay on 1283 for 7 miles, until you come to another flashing light
and a sign reading "Dancing Bear." Turn right at this intersection (i.e., stay
on 1283). After about 1.7 miles, you should see a 'left turn only' lane. Turn
right at this intersection onto CR 270 (the street sign may not be visible; it
gets knocked down a lot). Continue about 0.2 miles until the road splits. Take
the right hand fork (Savernake begins on your right at the split). The first
five gates on the right are ours. Numbers three and four connect to a paved
driveway; the rest are unimproved.
