Greetings to the Artisans of Ansteorra from Jehanne d'Avignon, Kingdom
Minister of Arts & Sciences.
What is A&S? - It has been said that the Arts are for beauty and the
Sciences for use. Properly done, anything can be an art, or a science.
Simply do, and do well, and all will be well. The Known World Handbook.
Just a reminder to all of you artisans out there that Laurel Prize Tourney,
which is only held every other year, is coming up on Saturday, July 31st
in Westgate.
Laurel Prize is a body of work display for commentary-only event. In
addition, several Laurels are offering prizes for specialty competitions.
Specialty Competitions at this time are..........
Wall Hanging Project Contest - Duchess Willow de Wisp
She will offer a prize to all that enter and a special prize to the winner.
All wall hangings must reflect a period style. It can be either original or
recreation. of a period piece. A special prize will be presented to her
favorite piece that tells a tale.
Best Folkloric Dancer - Duchess Willow de Wisp
Her Grace will also be offering a prize to the Dancer who does the best
folkloric Middle Eastern, Persian, Gypsy or Hindi dance
Most Period C&I Project and also Best Adaptation of a Book of Hours
Illumination to SCA purposes - Master Darius of the Bells
Each will receive a really spiff broach and a small basket of goodies, as
well as the opportunity to highlight their work on the Scribes website as
featured artist.
The following information is from the "Handbook for the Arts of Ansteorra"
that can be found at the Kingdom MoAS page at

Laurels Prize Tourney - The Laurels of Ansteorra believe that artisans who
don't like to compete should also have a venue for display of their works
and for constructive criticism. Laurel Prize Tourney is a body of work
display of all of the various types of arts that a person has researched and
attempted, or a display of a single art showing improvements and variations
over time. Over the years, it has also become common for individual Laurels
to host minicompetitions in a particular arts area, however this is not the
main purpose for the event. Since it is unlikely that an artisan will
produce enough new items to bring a new body of work annually, this event is
held every other year, alternating with Fall Arts Symposium.
Venue: Most commonly indoors.
Judges: Although the items are not actually "judged" it is considered a
working event for the Laurels, who are there to give constructive
commentary.
Documentation: At least a 1 to 2 page summary sheet. Supporting
documentation in a binder is never a bad idea.
Commentary: Laurels Prize Tourney was specifically designed as an event that
was not a competition but solely for the benefit of artists who want good,
in-depth commentary without competing for a score.
