Great question Rolanda,
The Equestrian portion of the "Lord of the Rings Demo" is basically as follows:
Two horses standing on a 12' X 16' Industrial tarp with shavings on it (to catch any residue) which is placed on the cobblestones in the middle of the entry area. People will be able to walk around the horses on all sides. Each horse will be completely barded and have a rider, one of which will represent mounted fighters or mounted knights, the other representing a gracious lady, perhaps of the courts. These riders or an attendant that will be with the riders will be answering questions from the crowds about the horse and rider in the middle ages and about our own Society and how they can become members of the SCA, should they choose to do so. The horses and riders will be standing in the same spot for approximately 2 hours per session, unless the trebuchet is ready to be fired before the end of the two hour session, at which point we will remove the horses for the trebuchet to be fired. At the end of the two hour session, the two horses and their riders will switch off with a
different pair of horses and riders.
As this demo is going to benefit most strongly the Barony of Stargate, the Barony of Loch Sollier, the Shire of Gates Edge and the Canton of Westgate, these groups had first right to volunteer for the positions. We are going to be there on June 3, 2005 from 22:00 to 0:00 (10:00 to midnight), on June 4, 2005 from 09:00 to 18:00 (9:00 to 6:00), on June 5, 2005 from 11:00 to 17:00 (11:00 to 5:00). We will return on June 11, 2005 from 09:00 to 18:00 (9:00 to 6:00), on June 12, 2005 from 11:00 to 17:00 (11:00 to 5:00). Then we will not be back until August 27th from 09:00 to 18:00 (9:00 to 6:00) and the final day will be on August 28th, 2005 from 11:00 to 17:00 (11:00 to 5:00).
Out of all the riders and horses that we had that volunteered for the demo, we only took the most bombproof horses that we could find. These horses will have to be standing on hard uneven ground without getting to move around, while in the midst of crowds of people that will be flowing past them and stopping to see the horses and riders. I am not taking any horses that I do not personally know to be able to deal with this situation, without resorting to kicking, biting, spinning or bolting. We have horses that are from Stargate, Westgate and Loch Sollier that have filled all of the available positions at this time.
If anyone wants to be considered for a back up position, in case something happens to one of the horses that are currently scheduled, please email me with your name, which horse you want to have considered, the date that you might be able to help out in case of an unexpected opening, and the time. If there are any questions that I can answer for anyone, please feel free to contact me at lancastercommunity at sbcglobal.net.
Yours in Service to the Dream,
Lady Annalies Pferdehirt
