Greetings. I am Don Christian Doré, Marshal in Charge for her soon-to-be
Stellar Majesty Elizabeta di Valore della Rosa's Queen's Champion
Tournament.
The tournament is only 2 1/2 weeks away. Conducted at the Castleton site
with full colors on display the field will be beautiful. In the
tournament expect a tough field with many fighters determined to be
Elizabeta's champion. Fortunately the Castleton site also provides
plenty of shaded space for pickup fights and challenges. The honor,
prowess, grace and skill of the fighters will make this tournament a
pleasure to watch and a challenge to fight. The charm and grace of our
Queen, and the fun activities she has planned for us will make the day
and evening a time to remember.

Following are a few notes concerning the details of the lyst. In short,
if you have fought in past Ansteorran Queen's Champion tournaments this
tournament should be very familiar to you. We are not planning any
radical changes. We will be allowing Cut & Thrust and using the reduced
armor experiment but participation in either of those is voluntary and
should make little difference to most fighters.
I know that is all the information some of you want but if you would
like to know about the details of this tournament, read on.
If you have any questions concerning this lyst, please ask me about it
first.
* Acceptability
o HRH has asked that _all_ combatants -- adult or youth,
novice or master -- be dressed in appropriate clothing if
they wish to enter either the Queen's Champion or Queen's
Hope lysts. This means a reasonable attempt at pre-1600s
clothing . Please, no exposed modern fencing jackets.
o Combatants will be expected to conduct themselves in a way
acceptable to Her Majesty at all times.
* Letters
o Letters of intent are NOT required for entry into this
tournament.
* Queen's Champion Tournament Format
o Double elimination
o Destructive byes
o Double kills re-fought once where a second double kill
counts as a loss to both.
* Fields
o We will set up 4 fields
o Fields will be large enough to prevent crowding and
excessive issues with hitting the ropes. We plan to use
standard fields of 30'x30'. In the semi-finals we will drop
some ropes so we have only two fields. In the final we will
have only one field.
o Fields will be bordered by ropes, not wooden barriers.
o Fields will be set up in shade where possible.
* Pairings:
o An attempt will be made _only_ in the first two rounds not
to pair fighters with opponents from their local group or
others with whom they often practice, though we cannot
guaranteed this. A fighter should not have to drive to an
event only to face the same people he sees at home.
o After the first two rounds pairings will be entirely random,
save that we will try to avoid re-pairing the same two
fighters in consecutive rounds.
o If there are safety or rules issues (such as mismatched
authorizations) the marshalate will work with the minister
of the lyst to re-pair the fighters.
o Fighters wishing to be re-paired for any other reason can
appeal to the Queen.
* Drop Out Round
o When we have approximately 8 fighters in the lyst, the Queen
will give those who cannot perform the duties of the
champion a chance to withdraw honorably.
o Out of Kingdom fighters may compete but need the individual
approval of the Queen to continue beyond the drop out round.
* Queen's Hope Tournament
o I will be MIC for Queen's Hope as well as QC
o Rounds will be fought between adult rounds
o Format to be determined based on number of fighters. If
there are many fighters we will fight an elimination style
tournament. If there are few fighters we will use some kind
of a round robin format.
o Youth combatants are reminded that the Queen selects her
Queen's Hope so the winner of the tournament may not be the
one chosen. Your conduct, honor, courtesy and grace will all
be important factors Her Majesty will consider.
* New and Experimental Fighting
o Two fighters authorized in Cut & Thrust and agreeing to do
so may fight their bout as C&T. They must make sure to have
an authorized C&T marshal present.
o The Society Rapier Marshal has prompted us to move ahead on
our experiments so we will be conducting our tournament
using reduced armor standards. The only actual reduction is
that the forearms and calves will not require "abrasion
resistant" coverage. All "kill zones" still require full
armor. For details visit this link on the Ansteorran Rapier
web site:
http://rapier.ansteorra.org/images/rules/experiment-reducedrapierarmor.pdf
o I would like to brief anyone who plans to marshal on the
reduced armor experiment before the fighting begins. The
idea is simple so this should only take 3 to 5 minutes.
o Blades classified by Ansteorra as Experimental will be
allowed with the agreement of the opponent.
* Weather
o Expect the day to be hot and sunny. Stay in the shade and
rest when you can. Bring a hat and plenty of cool water,
fruit juice and non-caffeine drinks.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Don Christian Doré
