Greetings Lords and Ladies,
Othar here.
Thank you to Gunnora, Gerald, and the many of you who have striven to
improve this didactic forum.
First, let it be said that all attempts to serve a more period feast are
the results of the work of Gerald of Leesville. If not for him, this
year would have been hot dogs and potato chips, with pink lemonade to
drink! Gerald has been the voice of reason in planning this feast. My
sole intention was, and is, to serve a good meal to 200 (or more) of my
closest weekend friends, aka you the SCA travellers. I agree that our
menu is not the most period, I really don't think were going to find
documentation for chocolate ice cream or frozen raspberry yogurt.
However, I feel that there will be a great many at feast this weekend
that will find the atmosphere surrounding our meal to be one of revelry,
fun, and enjoyment, qualities that should make Stargate's feast worth
the sacrifice of stepping outside the 900-1600 A.D. time frame.
Second, next year can we start this debate sooner. The publicity for
our feast is wonderful, but the powers that be had to have a cut-off
time and number for feast. Because of the nature of the menu, I need to
be able to secure the ingredients ahead of time. Had this discussion
occurred even a week earlier many of those who will end up on a waiting
list could have made the reservation deadline. Gerald and I are working
hard to guarantee that as many of you as possible that want to partake
in our feast will have the opportunity. Please ask the gate attendants
to be put on the waiting list, we will be doling out the unclaimed
reservations on Saturday afternoon.
Some consider cooking to be an art. I am one of Mistress Meadbdh's
students; her guidance has influenced a number of my A&S entries.
Others consider cooking to be service. Lady Claire of Stargate has
devoted uncounted hours serving her Barony, in an apron, being a kitchen
moil. Master Spider has fed more people at events than I can imagine.
I consider my part in this dinner to be a combination of these two
ideas, something that will give back to the Kingdom some of the
hospitality it has given me.
Respectfully submitted,
I remain in service,
Othar Morganson MKA: Jerry Dreifuerst
