Bear with me, please, while I ruminate a bit ... and forgive the ignorance
of an Ansteorran transplant.

If at least displays are also competitions, it seems this should satisfy the
documentation quarrel.

I don't think a display winner should receive a title. Still, perhaps a
display competition could offer categories in which the "prize" is a certain
amount of one-on-one with a Laurel knowledgeable in that skill area, to
review not only the article and its artistry/craftmanship, but also to get
the entrant started in some rudimentary documentation -- and especially
sources.

I'm mindful that many of us may be in rural communities, bereft of
sophisticated libraries, colleges or universities, and many more are not
electronically connected. The single fact that one has to make quite
special plans to try to find time and resources for sources, can rub one raw
in frustration. I could see this as one reason some work is "an attempt at"
period work, given what the person may have been able to glean from sources
they *do* have. We on the list are relatively elite in our good fortune at
having a wide swath of relatively solid sources "at our fingertips."

Just thinking aloud, pardon me.
Ronnie.
