I agree. I think we are seeing a trend across the Kingdom, and across all "area
of interest" boundaries, towards more authenticity while keeping the myths,
legends and "Dream (tm)" alive.

To answer the original question: sometimes it boils down to how many people show
up for the list. Really! If 58 people enter the list, we may set up a
single-elim, single-death list in order to get through by dark. If only *8* show
up, we'll quickly switch to a Swiss Five, best two-out-of-three, with maybe a
resurrection point thrown in. *grin!* This way the fighters who *did* show up
get to have all the fighting they can possibly handle...

Seriously, though... it's usually decided by the person organizing the list
(often the group's knight marshal), in consultation with the local nobility if
it's a barony. Some tournaments have a traditional format, and they usually
stick to that (the double-kill, single-elim format of Crown Tournament comes to
mind). At Stargate Baronial, we've been experimenting the last couple of years
with different variations on the "elimination" theme. At less "formal" events,
we've tried an *amazing* variety of stuff over the years. Some of it worked,
some didn't... it's fun to play around and see what works.
