you just hit the crux of the problem squarely on the head ... here
(scadian) like many other realms - in this time and times past, it is
the fanatics within a population that cause the problems, that
creates the labels that get slapped on those populations/groups ...
rarely is it the "norms" within that population / culture.  the
problem is, with their personal "agenda's", such fanatics tend to
wield power far in excess of the general rank-n-file, and often the
many are tarred & feathered by the actions of the few.

face it, every group has them ... those that feel they are right in
attempting to impose their beliefs on others - and often they are
only encouraged by those that resist or ignore them.  I think it's
some basic thread of human nature at work since it shows up in every
group, every culture, every time .... it's one of those things that
when you see it, be cautious around it, for it's a dangerous thing.

particularly in these over PC times where culture seems to be
fragmenting in ever smaller special interest groups that all want
something different from you.  gotten to a point where one can live a
human life without offending someone simply by existing, having
contrary opinions, believing differently, ... and seems that every
sub-group want their view of reality to be the norm that all should
follow, because of it's "correctness"

all in all, frustrating and hopeless if one try's to always play the
"appease everyone" middle ground ... best course of action as it
always has been, is to live ones life as one deems fit, live it well,
live it with style, ... and to hell with the rest.  you're always
going to offend someone, especially of late in this country, so
accept it and go on ... as it has always been.
