[Ansteorra] What has happened?

I have a speculation but I don't have any facts to back it up nor the length
of experience to prove it out, so I ask those who've been doing this a lot
longer than me to please provide some insight.

Did the SCA used to use a lot more FREE sites than we do now? Right or
wrong, it seems that perhaps people are more inclined to be careless on a
site that is paid for, as there's perhaps some expectation of service to be
provided rather than a genuine appreciation for the site owners and the use
of the site.

Again...speculation, no facts, just thinking out loud. :)

were inspecting the site after our Shire's recent event, and we found
numerous styrofoam cups (or remnants thereof) scattered hither and yon
(perhaps our own fault for offering them for coffee during breakfast). We
also found one camping area with a still-smoldering campfire and numerous
pop-top tabs (and I think one beer can).
