It wouldn't hurt my feelings either, despite counting many romans and
pirates among my friends. Many participants in the discussion were
favorable to the idea in theory. Some were quick to point out, and
rightly so, that plenty of other groups exist to engage those who
prefer earlier/later time periods.

That said, I believe two factors were largely responsible for the lack
of support the idea garnered in the end. It was felt that
1) implementation and enforcement of specific cut-off dates would be a
nightmare (i.e. we can’t enforce “pre 1700s” why do we think we could
enforce “post 600s”?), and
2) the fall-out such a change would generate (loss of membership,
ill-will, etc. - the usual uproar that starts any time we put in
writing something we are already supposed to be doing) would be
counterproductive to any benefit our organization would gain.

I believe... if I remember correctly... that a softer approach was
suggested - basically a return to strongly encouraging and rewarding
research/play that focuses on the middle ages & renaissance, while
discouraging newcomers from playing outside our timeline.

My account is very abbreviated and probably colored by personal
opinion. I'd encourage anyone with strong interest to visit the GC
archives (http://grandcouncil.sca.org/gcsubscribe.php) and follow the
discussion themselves. It starts mid February 2006. :)
