Many of our events are so large and spread out that the modern
comunications items are a big help, also, we tend to be older and have
more responsibilities, kids, parents, jobs and we are less able to run
around all over a site. Too many bad knees and other body parts.
I, too, long for the days of the smaller, more compact events. I hope
the upcoming Steppes Fall Court will be closer to one of those.
By the way, not only are the events larger in attendance, but we are
spreading out. Instead of a single mundane tent, there are the period
type tents, whick tend to take up more room, or folks have kids, that
don't want to share tents, so there is a tent for the parents, and one
for each child. With additional gear comes the need for an equipment
tent and I know of at least one tent that served as a doghouse! A
single list field and an archery range, that doubled as a thrown weapons
range, takes a lot less room than multiple list fields, an archery range
that is used all day, so another range is needed for thrown weapons, add
in an equestrian field and camping for the horse folks, makes the entire
site much larger.
Let me also mention, that as we have grown, we have become more of a
target for troublemaking mundanes. I have had to try to handle 'drunk'
mundanes in the past. One just wandering drunk, I took to the kitchen
and got him eatting until I could find others to get him off the site.
Another set, which seemed to be 'looking for trouble', left after
showing them some of our weapons (I think the fact that I was a fighter,
kinda freaked them out--they may have thought tthat ALL of the ladies
were fighers). I also introduced them to Sutan. They vanished. Both
times, a walkie talkie or cellphone would have been a great help.
