Another option is to invest in one of the fairly inexpensive Photoshop
programs (I'm still using Photoshop Elements 3.0). (Note, I snagged a
photo from Ld Phocas's flashless set to use as a quick example). 

If you use the very simple "adjust lighting" option, you can quickly
and easily transform this:

to this:

http://www.geocities.com/countesskat/IMG_1589_2.jpg

It only takes a couple of mouse-clicks and you'll never miss the flash
you didn't use. :)
