Trimming posts isn't nonsense. It's courteous, and simply good
netiquette. No one wants to scroll through 65 screens of stuff that's
not germane to the discussion at hand.

I'm part of discussion groups that will boot your message back if you
quote more than the relevant bits you're responding to, and one that
will autoboot any message that quotes more than three lines, not
including headers.

Somehow I doubt that asking folks to trim posts is what's causing
people not to play...but rudeness might be worth looking into.
