Imagine normally fighting with a regular epee and then having (or forfiet the fight) to go out with a 40" blade that you are not familiar with.

You lunge at your normal range (for a 35" blade) and now you've got an extra 5" of blade that has to go somewhere.  Not something I would like to be responsible for.

Likewise, you could find yourself a shorter blede more like you're used to and go out and be at, what should be a severe disadvantage.  Picture the situation of me being legged using a 35" blade fighting Piet who is still standing and using a 40" blade.  I should never be able to defeat him in that situation.

I think dropping the baseline weapon was a mistake at this time, but I'll go along with it under protest.
