ARN - Authorization

Sounds like a good idea, Duncan.

Here in Ansteorra, we are in the process of standardizing our
authorizations, meaning that not all authorizing marshals do things the
same way currently. Hopefully, though, they all are at least in the same
book if not on the same page. <G>

My response is going to be directed at authorizing new fighters.

During the authorization, the authorizing marshal should quiz the
authorizee over our rules and conventions. Note this can, and should,
include information over the society rules of the list, etc as we are
responsible for knowing and abiding by them too.

Here in Ansteorra, since we have a single, all-encompassing authorization
(for regular rapier, and additional authorization is required for heavy
rapier), I expect all authorizing marshals to test the fighter in *all*
styles. They have to be safe (not a hazard to themselves, their
opponents, or the marshals) in every style.

General things need to be checked also, such as calibration, fighting
from seated position, fighting a legged opponent, how do they react to an
all-out blitzing attack, fighting off-hand, etc.

Unlike some of the responses I've seen, I would prefer a lengthier, and
more comprehensive authorization for those that the marshal did *not* know
well. The reasoning behind this is that any schmoe can behave themselves
for 15 or 20 minutes to get through a quick authorization. If you don't
know them, put them through all the paces you can think of. If you're
familiar with them and their fighting, you've probably already seen them
at their worse.

Any authorizing marshal that has any doubts about a fighter should not
sign off on them. Discuss with them what your concerns are and let them
try again later. They can still train and practice, they just don't get
to fight in that tournament, etc. Along those lines, I prefer that no one
is authorized for the first time the morning before a tournament unless
arrangements have been made ahead of time.

I think that covers most of general stuff.

No, we don't specifically test them on rapier and cane, or scabbard, or
beer mug, or bricks as all these tend to fall under defensive secondary or
non-standard weapon. I don't think anyone would want to go through and
authorization for every little thing I've seen taken out on the field over
the years. (Off hand dons, cadets, plaque rats, fashion sense, the world,
ad nauseum)
