Precisely, but remember that for a formal duel, the custom was that 
*both* fighters would be starting with the same armor and weapons--I 
wouldn't be taking, say, case of rapiers against your rapier and mail gauntlet.

I'm not sure why. Combats "for exercise and the amusement of our 
ladies" or Prizes and Challenges were "friendly" bouts, using blunted 
weapons and not trying to kill the other guy. Pretty much the same 
thing we do in the SCA today.
