Hi,
The force received really should not be significantly unless the force
is below the knee, and in any it shouldn't be any greater than what would
happen in ordinary "dry" conditions.
Having hurt myself slipping in the mud (I think it was a mild
hamstring, It wasn't fighting, it was carrying groceries), and knowing of a
couple people who had injuries as a result of slipping and falling that ended
their fighting, I have to say the the people in the cleats did the right thing.
They protected themselves from the hazards on the field.
As to metal cleats, assuming that one is not referring to Golf cleats,
which resemble nothing so much as daggers on the sole, metal cleats (the one's
that I've seen have a rubber covered metal core) shouldn't be a hazard to
anyone.
I certainly would not recommend them (like me) who hasn't take the time
to familiarize themselves with their peculiarities (for that matter, I wouldn't
recommend someone going to/from sneakers and combat boots) of the foot gear,
for those who have trained with them, I would argue that it makes them safer.
Note that the above is more a statement of footwear and atheletic
activities than anything else.
