I respectfully disagree.  When the hall is empty and we are decorating it for 12th night every
year, it is not possible to understand anything short of a shout from more than about 30 feet.
 The ceiling is simply too high and the stage is not a bandshell which would allow sound to
resonate well.  It was designed for amplified sound and that is all that will work.  Last year
I was sitting at the third or fourth row from the stage and I didn't hear more than half of
what was said.

Regarding the unsightliness of microphones, I wholeheartedly agree.  That is why I recommended
wireless mics for the herald and Crown.  Using momentary switches, they can still have privacy
when needed and the pickups will never be seen in photographs.  Timothy of Glastonbury seems
to have some expertise in this, perhaps he could get a quote for renting three or four
wireless mics for the weekend in case we can convince their majesties of the justness of our
cause.
