Greetings to the list from Medb Liath.
For those of you who are contemplating a trip to St. Louis for KWHS, I have a suggestion for a possible way of getting there on the cheap.
Check out Amtrak.
They currently have a special - buy one get one free. The Heartland Express out of OKC hooks up with the Texas Eagle, which goes from San Antonio to Chicago daily. Lots of us are on the way and of course it stops in St. Louis. The special expires Feb 15th and seats are on a first come first serve basis.
Since we are making a family mini vacation out of this trip (kids and dad go to Six Flags, while I attend KWHS), I needed to get four people to St. Louis. The round trip fare for the entire family is a tad under 300 dollars. That is less than the gas bill for the van for the trip.
Single adult fares range from 140 and up. With two for one, you could find a fellow herald and get there and back for 75 or so dollars.
Split the cost of the hotel room (will they split four ways?) and you could manage the trip for a really economical price.
Travel from the train station to the hotel is still probematic. If enough of us went, then splitting taxi fare might be worth while or we might be able to arrange a shuttle from the hotel or from someone in Three Rivers.
While train travel is slower than driving, it has numerous advantages. You aren't driving, therefore you won't be getting any out of state tickets. We can get up and move around, bring our own provisions to save on costs, and have fun hanging out together.
We are leaving Thurday afternoon and arriving Friday morning. We plan on staying an extra day and will come home Monday afternoon.
I hope that some of you consider this and join the fun.
In service,
medb liath
