Apologies for cross-posting.

Names and Naming Practices in the Middle Ages: 41st International Congress on Medieval Studies Kalamazoo, Michigan -- May 4-7, 2006

Session(s) sponsored by the Society for Medieval Languages and Linguistics.

We invite submissions of abstracts for this session, with the aim of bringing together established scholars and current students interested in personal and/or place-names. We hope to have sufficient submissions for a session on personal names and one on place-names-or at least sufficient submissions for two sessions combining the two areas. Proposals should relate clearly to either personal names or place-names.

Please note that this invitation is a special one on names and is not the official invitation that will be posted by the Society at a later date.

Please send an expression of interest and a proposed title to Dr. Scott Catledge by email scplc at i-55.com to be received by May 12. The expressions of interest and proposed titles will be forwarded to Dr. Paul A. Johnson, who must decide how many sessions to propose to the 2006 Congress Committee by May 15, 2005.

Papers for these sessions shall have a primary linguistic focus on personal or place-names in languages spoken and/or written between AD 450-1600.

Papers should be designed to be 20 minutes long; audiovisual equipment and assistance is available if indicated at the time of submission of the abstract.

Abstracts should adhere to the following rules, established by the Board of the Medieval Institute, the organizers of the Congress:

1.. Papers submitted will be essentially new and will not have been presented in public before [Note that a presentation before a private group is not a bar to presentation at the Congress.]
2.. At top of the front page, include the following:
  Title of Paper
  Subject Area
Name of author; institutional affiliation/Independent Scholar; complete mailing address; phone and FAX numbers; and e-mail address
  Confirmation of 20-minute reading time
3.. Abstracts must be typed, double-spaced, not more than 300 words in length, and must clearly indicate the paper's thesis, methodology, and conclusions.
4.. Two copies of the abstract must be submitted by the stipulated deadline date.
5.. An A-V/Computer Needs Form, obtainable from the Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University, 1201 Oliver Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49008), must be attached to the back of the abstract, even if no A-V or computer is needed. Late A-V requests cannot be met. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is OCTOBER 1, 2005. This is a firm deadline; no abstract received after that date can be considered for the 2006 Congress.
Send abstracts and A-V forms by September 30, 2005 directly to
