I know and understand that, and agree those are legitimate concerns.  I'm thinking of when the rules of heraldry conflict with what the (non-herald) human eye actually sees.  For example, I've seen registered SCA devices with vairs and/or ermines and/or counterchanges, etc., that looked so complex I had a hard time even figuring out what I was looking at.  But to my eye the difference between in chief and not in chief simply means an object is little higher and smaller, whereas by heraldry it can mean the difference between something completely unacceptable (a shorter purple area above a blue area) and perfectly fine (a purple area above a blue area of equal height).

No but neither did "period heralds" need to worry about being sued over copyright infringement, logo's or conflicting with someone in another country because there was little chance of them meeting. We live in a very small world where communication is rapid and we are likely to meet or run into confusion because of "conflict". This keeps us unique and out of trouble!

I understand it has to do with the rules of heraldry and I definitely appreciate the help that people in this group have given me--it's great.  But in "real life" there's relatively little difference between the two images.  I have to wonder; would period heralds have been as concerned about these details as SCA heralds?
