In the case of the difference between the 
two designs that were presented...one was 
"per fess" meaning that the field was divided 
into two parts. The purple and the blue 
sections were laying side by side.  But once 
you change the design to a chief, you are 
putting a purple band on top of an all blue 
field.

Visually these can seem similar.  But it is an 
important distinction for the way the SCA 
handles heraldic designs and the way that 
many period heraldic jurisdictions handled 
designs.
