So far in addition to the precedent you quoted, I found the following:

Henry Bartholomew Weste. Device. Per pale azure and sable, on a tankard Or a
Celtic cross azure.

    This device is returned for conflict with the device of Gregory of Grand
Sea, Barry wavy argent and azure, on a pitcher Or a compass star azure.
There is a single CD for a field, but no difference is granted between a
tankard and a pitcher. There is not a CD for changing only the type of
tertiary charge, since a tankard/pitcher is too complex to be suitable for
purposes of section X.4.j.ii of the Rules for Submission.


After due consideration, the visual differences between tankards and mortars
and pestles are sufficient for a CD. [Elizabeth Rea, 02/2002, A-Meridies]

"[There is a CD] for the change to type of charge (tankard to cup)." (LoAR
1/92 p.4).

So a tankard conflicts with a pitcher, but not with a cup or goblet or
mortar and pestles.
