The UC Berkeley library has a wonderful late Period little book "The book
(booke?) of Quintessence" The quintessence is the 5x distilled brandy, and the
book will tell you it cures everything from impotence to old age.  Relevant
here, it puts all manner of things into the brew, including gold.
