HERB - Carob, from the Cook's List

Just because they knew of carob doesn't mean they used it in the ways we
would use it (or chocolate) today.

They certainly wouldn't have been using it as a substitute for something
they had never heard of.

Many of the herbs we now use commonly in the kitchen were primarily
considered medicinal in period.
