HERB - lilac

[Julia Spiritstone]

Does anyone know if the purple lilac bushes are new world? 

I know that French Lilac was around and used in period, and I've seen
pictures of them but I'm unfamiliar with their scent.

I'm really interested in mixing a perfume with the purple lilac scent.
