Thea, thanks for the wine recipe. It sounds like fun. I had a couple of
questions, though. When you listed some of the things that could be used,
apparently it was in coulmns when you wrote it, but it didn't come out that way
when I was reading it. Some of the things are obvious, such as dandelion,
chamomile, and roses the flowers are used, mints the plant is used, potatoes and
turnips the root is used. Others were not so obvious. Any possibility you
could repost just this bit, in a different format?
I was also wondering, some of the herbs you list as being used in period have
medicinal uses. Do you know if the wines with these herbs in them were used
medicinally? Among other things, both blackberry and raspberry leaves can be
used as astringents to treat diarrhea. I wonder if the wine would have the same
effect? And I would think vervain in the wine would make one sleepy.
I also had a question about the edibility of one or two of the things listed.
My mother always told me that pyracantha and beautyberry both were not edible
(although I think she said they were not poisonous). Tansy should not be used
during pregnancy, and I think the same is true of the broom plant, but I'm not
sure about it. And juniper berries in quantity are hard on the kidneys (yes, I
know they are used in gin - it's not real good for the kidneys either :) ). It
is possible that in a wine, these would not pose a problem. Since I have not
done much with wine, I thought I would ask.
Thanks for sharing your expertise.
