It's a thirst-quenching drink (mixed 12 parts water to 1 part syrup).
Because of the vinegar, it restores the electrolyte balance... it's the
medieval Arabic equivalent of Gatorade.
(I'm told there may be a similar vinegar and honey mix from European
sources, but most of the ones I've seen turn out to be recipes for lightly
fermented honey drinks.)
