I think you're probably thinking of "Honey, Mud, Maggots, and Other Medical 
Marvels: The Science Behind Folk Remedies and Old Wives' Tales" by Robert 
Root-Bernstein ISBN 0395924928 $13.

I haven't picked it up as of yet, but it's on my list to get eventually.
