E-coli bacteria is present in all fresh water lakes. The year in question the lake was particularly low and the temperatures very high making the shallow warm waters of the lake a perfect petri <sp?> dish. As soon as a significant amount of rain fell the bacteria count dropped and the lake was re opened for swimming. The problem is not exclusive to Smithville lake. That same year several NE OK region lakes were posted as potential trouble spots.

Like Rosamund, Ismet and I have swum in the lake numerous times over the years with no ill effect. ('Course it coulda been the evenings consumption of sufficient `disinfectant' that prevented it. ^_^ )
Others have had a problem. Like life... your milage may vary.

But Lilies... _that's_ worth it.
