M'lord Simon,

Not only are we practically neighbors (I am in Three Mtns), but it sounds
like you and I are working on much the same project :) My next tent is a
Norse A-frame.

The only good primary Norse tent info I've seen is the extant tent from the
Gokstad find. I have two archeological books coming through inter-library
loan, that detail the items from Gokstad, and can give you a review on their
contents as soon as they arrive. I don't know just how hard core you are
going in making your tent, but I can share with you what I know and what I
have. The Gokstad tent has a wool membrane (I am still researching the
weave), had decorative heads carved on the four upright supports, and was
very large. I've heard of someone doing a 2/3 replica, due to its size, but
haven't heard of anyone doing an exact duplicate yet. I have good, exact
line drawings of the heads, if you want copies.

There is a page with good, wool, handsewn Norse tents at
http://www.teleport.com/~tguptill/manchester.htm. It shows a picture of some
heads from the Gokstad find, but the tent-maker contends that they are
actually from furniture, and I cannot verify this, my information showing
they ARE from the tent.

I've taken the liberty of forwarding your questions to the Anstorran Tent
Guild (I'm a member--it's open to other Kingdoms) and to a couple tent-making
Laurels from An Tir. If anyone has a recommendation for further research, I
am hoping they will share with both of us :)

Best of luck to you on your project! If you enter it in Summits A&S, I'd
love to come down and see how it turns out.

In Service,
Lady Mira Silverlock McKendrick
