SCA "period" is defined to be Western civilization before 1600 AD, concentrating on the Western European High Middle Ages.  One significant advancement that helps us define what is "end of period" was the wide spread use of firearms on the battlefield.  Although the decline had started with the advent of the long-bow, with the development of firearms, heavy armor, pretty much, became obsolete. 

Firearms also changed the way we fought at sea.  Here is a snap-shot of what we know about how firepower was adopted as a naval tactic.
