Highly recommended. Get both if you can. The only thing out there in my
opinion that does a good job of talking about what was eaten in the earlier
part of SCA period. She cites a source for EVERYTHING. woo hoo! I
especially liek the chromatography data that suggests that they cooked the
cabbage. Science geeks unite! :)

>H. Norris: Medieval Costume & Fashion
20 years ago this was the standard. Now, we all use it as an example of
what not to do...Norris was notorious for re-drawing medieval illos, and
adding details that he thought "must" be there. pretty pictures and a good
place to start if you know nothing, and are intimidated by "real" costume
books, but for a real reserach library, I wouldnt recommend it. I have a
bootleg copy that I made when I first joined, and I use it for newbies who
want an idea of what to wear to an SCA event, adding LOTS of disclaimers...

>F.L. Boucher et al: 20 000 Years of Fashion
I own this book...it has lots of primary souce material photos, including
some extant exam0ples. yay! I cant speak for the accuracy of the text,
since I never read it, I just look at the pictures :).

good luck! book shopping is fun.
