I agree. However, it is not just an American "custom"
to seek out the familiar foods of home. I think that
it is a human trait. In 1978, I went with some SCA
friends on a package tour of Spain and Portugal.
Almost all of the people on the tour were
Californians. The exceptions were three Chinese
couples from Hong Kong, who were with a Chinese couple
from San Francisco. When the meals were part of the
package, they ate with everyone. But when the meal
was not part of the package, all 8 of them headed off
to the nearest Chinese restaurant that they could
find. And from what I heard from them when I asked
them was that they prefered their familiar food, even
if they had to go way out of their way to find it and
even if it was in a bad part of town!
