My guess is that we are meant to use a little piece of the mace (which
looks rather like a thick bit of netting,btw) without grinding it up or
pulverizing it with a mortar & pestle. Much as one might flavor a liquid with
a cinnamon stick, in order to be able to remove the stick, and not cloud the
liquid with a powder, or have to strain it.

The recipe says "a little Mace Whole". What is meant by
"Whole" in this? It's probably not the whole nut since the
outside is nutmeg and the inside is mace, right? Is "whole" just
being ignored in this redaction?
