The question of a fancy feast versus plainer fare
comes up all the time and has for the past 28 or so years.
And both styles have their places
within the scheme of things. There is nothing wrong, and
certainly it ought to be encouraged to cut loose and do
the big multi-course $15.00 a person 12th Night feast.
The Madrigal Dinner over at the Middle School here in Chelsea
(town of 4,000) is getting $25.00 per person. That $15.00
is a bargain. How much do people spend on their outfits, or
their other indulgences? It's all a question of priorities and
if they only want to spend $6.00 or $10.00 then provide the
maps to Wendy's and Appleby's or Denny's... I don't know that
both types of feasts have to be accommodated at the same event,
nor is there always room to do so. As long as there is truth
in advertising (don't promise quail and serve chicken at $12.00
each) the burden of the cook with regard to the idea of what
the feast should be seems to have been met. If the food is great,
and the company is good, then what will people care about in six months?
Certainly, some events require the big feast and occasion. And if
someone
wants to do the "a**-kicking feast, something people would remember"
more power to them.
