Za'atar (also appearing as za'tar, zatar, zahtar and lord knows what other
spellings) is both an herb and a spice blend.  Considering the different
responses, I would say that the particular herb described various from place
to place in the Islamic world, but that it is commonly a member of the mint
family which is not a true mint (genus Mentha).
