A lot of pits from iron age and early medieval
Europe that archeologists used to label 'rubbis
pits' quite reflexively are currently being
redesignated 'storage pits'. The reconstruction
I've seen of one seems to be a 2 meter deep pit,
roughly 1 x 1 meter, with wooden latticework at
the bottom and wood struts (and perhaps panelling)
along the sides. It stores apples quite handily.
