[Sca-cooks] Interesting facts of life

Sorry Kirsten,

That list of 'facts' has been repeatedly de-banked on this list and
others. 90% is simply fallacious, such as origins of words and expressions
that have nothing to do with reality (the Chaucer-list and Anglo-Saxon
list had a LOT of fun with these) and the rest is stretching a thin sliver
of fact beyond recognizability. Rest assured, most laymen fall for it. As
with many things of this nature, it helps to sit back and wonder a wonder
about the 'facts' presented- what is presented as evidence? DOes it hold
up to a simple check of the OED? Does it make sense? Was someone who lived
in a thatched cottage really likely to have a bed with a canopy? (NOT!)

Not meant as a criticism- I'd just like to see this little urban tale die
a horrible death...

'Lainie
