Patricia Quintana gives a recipe for Empanadas de Corpus (Lenten Turnovers)
in Feasts of Life which are custard filled.  Under turnover variations, she
says, "Add shredded fresh coconut to custard used to fill the turnovers.
Turnovers are also delicious filled with blackberry or other homemade
preserves."  She also uses the term "pastes" for a meat filled turnover
earlier in the book.

I've encountered both sweet and savory empanadas over the years, but the
majority have been fruit filled.
