I think all the baked beans I've had have been out of cans or cooked
by adding brown sugar and smoked pork or bacon to canned "pork and beans".

Does anyone have any good recipes I could try?

I suspect these are not period for various reasons (sugar or other
sweeteners too expensive, wrong beans, better uses for expensive
oven time etc.) but are there any similar period baked bean recipes?
