Aha, that's by M.F.K. Fisher, the doyenne of 20th Century cookery
writers, who wrote not only about food but about life and living.  She
knew all about Living with the capital L, on bare sustenance on which
other people would merely Survive.  I collect her books, amongst other
sub-collections of the household cookbook collection.  Fabulous woman, I
wish I had met her.  "Wolf" and several other of her books have been
reissued in an omnibus volume, THE ART OF EATING.
