Kirsten,

I have friends and older relatives who are hearing-impaired. When I was
younger, I took the time to learn the ASL alphabet. I still remember
most of it.  Before TDD phones, I had neighbors who were deaf, but their
children were not. So, when they had to deal with anything important,
they'd come to me.  They would sign to their kids - their kids translate
to me - me to the person called - person called back to me - me to the
kids - kids sign back to parents. Oops, I guess I just dated myself -
again.

I suppose you can't call children's selective hearing deafness?
