At 08:37 PM 12/14/02,Diana Skaggs said something like:
>OK, guys. I know there are others out there who remember buying 1# loaves
>of doughy white bread @ 12 for $1?

YES!! I remember my dad grumbling that when his favorite 'gourmet'
Hillbilly bread got to a quarter a loaf we'd have to start making our own
at home. Just TRY to find any of that fancy schmancy stuff for under $2.

>When going to the movies took a quarter, and you could get a soda or
>popcorn, too?

I remember getting a roll of lifesavers for a nickel. And I remember when
the price got increased to 8cents.

Then again, I remember very clearly watching JFK's funeral on TV. The moon
walk happened during a summer beach rental in Oregon. The Challenger
disaster happened on a morning that I was being cranky getting the kids off
to school, and all of a sudden the crankiness didn't seem so important at all.

I corrected someone today in a chat environment that Cindy Lauper did not
do the first Manic Monday recording. *sigh*

I remember VERY fondly visiting my great aunt and uncle in Utah, and the
very regimented way that auntie put out each and every meal, and the
intense love she put into each and every meal. No meal was ever less
special than another. Every meal had 2 vegetables, fruits, breads,
potatoes, meat and gravy. That was for three meals a day, every day. There
were certain recipes and methods that were handed down from the great great
grandmother that my auntie still did.

In many ways the 'old days' were pretty nice. And, in many ways, it was
really awful. I remember meeting my first negro. I turned to my uncle as
we stood in the grocery line (getting nickel lifesavers) and asked very
loudly if that man was made out of chocolate. Luckily the stranger didn't
begrudge the little girl that question, and explained it to me.

>No PC's, CD's, or even 8 track tapes? TV was only black and white? No
>icemakers? No McDonalds or other hamburger chains?

I remember when McDonalds first came to Las Vegas, and the first time we
bought their food. Interesting, but nothing special. I was much more
impressed by Weinerschnitzel, and the nickel hot dogs.

Ah well. The old days.

Maggie MacD.
