Here's a fun query for the list (I hope!) :-)
One of my friends told me today that she planned to make cheesecakes for each of her three professors who'd written her recommendation letters for a scholarship. i thought this was a nice idea, and since I have two profs. who were gracious enough to recommend me for a summer study-abroad program, I also want to make them a little something as a gesture of thanks. Now, here's the cool part - one teaches ancient Roman literature, the other Classical and Medieval Latin lit. So, I thought it would be really fun to make them something out of Apicius, or for the medieval lit. teacher, something from a western European cookery book, pre-1400? (If not, I'll settle for 1500 as the cut-off date ;-> And if the book was written in Latin, so much the better!) I will browse through my own cookbooks over the next couple days, but I was wondering if anyone had a particular recommendation. Here are my criteria, though:
-it has to fit on a dinner-sized plate. (one big thing or several small things would be fine, doesn't matter)
-it has to go on a paper plate - nothing too sticky, syrupy...
-it doesn't have to be refrigerated; I need to be able to carry it to school in the morning, and around campus with me, until I can drop it off at the afternoon classes. (they're on different days so I don't need to carry both at once)
-it has to be a sweet dessert - a cake- or cookie-type-thingy would be best
-i want to give them to the teachers this week, thursday at the latest
I know this is kind of a lot to ask - and kind of a random question - but I figured that, since most of you guys know the historical cookery canon better than I do, someone could point me in the right direction :-)
thanks for any help!
Vittoria
