I personally like the semi-subtle weaving of the theological tension between the Franciscans and the Benedictines regarding materialism in the Church. From the gruel eaten by the main characters to the argument of whether Jesus owned his own tunic . . . classic duel of theological heavyweights of the time. Anyone else notice how much of the grounds of the monastery were devoted to wine and food (not counting the library catacombs).
