While this is laudable, it's a matter of choice. I don't know how the
numbers work overall in the East, but I rarely pay for events when I'm
working them. I agree completely that paying for them does support the
group, but on the other hand, I can't imagine anyone thinking that
merely coming to an event to cook, or steward, or whatever, without
actually attending the event, for the most part, is an insufficient
contribution.

Most of the cooks did not sit at the feast; most of them didn't reserve
or pay. They just showed up and worked. The servers (I assume) paid the
site fee, but not for food, and they got pretty much the same food as
everyone else, if not perhaps in the same proportions. Most of them
actually seemed a little surprised at the prospect of being fed.

But then, as Kiri-sensei points out, this is related to event structure
and local custom.
