Ah, but there were the saucy Carbonari - they were Italian noblemen who indulged in random acts of kindness and charity. They would dress up in blackface (thus the name carbonari), and assist those in desperate straits, widows, orphans, and the like. Their MO was to show up at the door of someone in need in blackface, and give them what they truly needed, anonymously and without burdensome paperwork . . . They were closely linked to the Freemasons, a dangerous bunch of free thinkers and radical liberals . . .
Since we had a thread going on little used cultures, I'm really rather astounded that the Masons, who were arguably the motivating force behind the Enlightenment and other subversive movements (like democracy and other dangerous notions), have been utterly ignored by the SCA as a whole. Of course, the image of overweight, balding Shriners driving around in embarrassing little cars is somehow not what we hold dear, but I think you can make the case that the Masons and other heretical types have had more influence on the course of western history than any other group, with the possible exception of the Normans.

    Sieggy
