Not only was it a question of which foods were
available (Think Tusser) but also a question of
the calendar customs associated with the season.
And the work associated with the season. But
it can be very hard to work and commute full-time, take care
of a family throughout the week, volunteer,
and then suddenly emerge in 14th century
appropriate dress, cooking the appropriate foods and
serving them at the appropriate time of day, when faced
with a modern campsite, a ban on fires, and the local
grocery being out of rosewater for a weekend event that
is hours away from home. And pack everything in a rather
small vehicle to boot. So for which events do we make
the effort and for which meals might be a good counter query?
