Me, I use a kettle.... but you're right, boiling water doesn't get a pan very messy. Even when it's my busband doing it :)

Did it the "other" way once by accident (thought the kettle had boiled, and it hadn't). Adding cold water to hot butter made it cool rapidly, and make the buttery rice go all... no, you don't want to go there.
